The Most Watched Tennis Matches of All Time

  • Only five matches averaged at least 5 million viewers.
  • Serena Williams is featured in half of the most-watched tennis matches.
Tennis legend Serena Williams, seen here waving to the crowd after losing the final match of her career to Ajla Tomljanovic 2022 U.S. Open tennis, has suffered two pulmonary embolisms — the first in 2011 and the second in 2017 after the birth of her first child. She was able to return to competition both times but has also said that she needs to be vigilant for the rest of her life when it comes to early detection of blood clots.

As major tennis tournaments continue to bring in more revenue from increasing popularity, big changes may be on the horizon.

A unified premium tour, similar to golf’s proposed LIV-PGA merger, would have the potential to eclipse previous media and sponsorship rights deals. With the Tennis Channel also growing and looking for new investors, a merger could help the sport capitalize on the large audiences tuning into tennis-related programming.

Ranking, reputation, and remuneration create marquee matchups that capture millions of viewers.

The most-watched tennis match of all time is the “Battle of the Sexes“, drawing a reported 50 million American viewers.

On September 20, 1973, Billie Jean King took on Bobby Riggs in one of the most anticipated exhibition matches in the sport’s history. Riggs, a notorious and self-proclaimed chauvinist, claimed he could beat top women’s tennis players. He was 55 years old and had long retired.

His comments stirred more discontent among women like King during the era of women’s demands for equal rights and representation. When Riggs beat highly ranked Margaret Court in May of that year, King stepped up to fight for parity in tennis.

The two played for $100,000 (worth $720,268 today) in the Houston Astrodome in front of 30,000 live spectators. King defeated Riggs in three sets out of five and forever transformed the landscape of women’s tennis.

Second with 9.4 million viewers is the U.S. Open final of 2002 between Pete Sampras and Andre Agassi

The rivals played each other 34 times in their careers and five times in finals. This meeting would be their last in a rivalry stretching almost 20 years. Sampras won in four sets for his fifth and final U.S. Open title, as he retired the following year.

Five of the 10 most-watched tennis matches involved Serena Williams

The 23-time Grand Slam winner’s last career match at the 2022 U.S. Open drew 4.8 million viewers, good for sixth on the list.
