ESPN has hired Sergio Gonzalez away from The Athletic as VP of digital editorial, Front Office Sports has learned.
Gonzalez will lead editorial operations including newsbreakers and reporters across ESPN.com and social platforms, an ESPN spokesperson confirmed to FOS. He will report directly to Mike Foss, ESPN’s EVP of studio and entertainment. Gonzalez is the top newsroom hire that the company has made since Roxanna Scott’s role as SVP, editor-in-chief was eliminated in August.
Gonzalez first joined The Athletic in 2018 as senior managing editor of NBA content and was promoted to one of the outlet’s three editorial director positions in 2023.
He will start at ESPN later this month.
Last week, longtime former CBS Sports digital executive Adi Joseph also announced on LinkedIn he was joining ESPN, replacing VP of news David Kraft who retired after a 30-year run.
“I couldn’t be more excited for the new challenge, where I’ll have a much more directly integrated role in television platforms and work with the people who break so much of the sports news that exists,” Joseph wrote.
