Roxanna Scott is out as ESPN’s top editor after fewer than 10 months on the job, sources told Front Office Sports.
Scott was named SVP, editor-in-chief last December. Her role was eliminated this week in a reorganization of the network’s news division and there will be a new editorial structure that ESPN brass feels will better support its newsgathering needs, a source said. Scott’s exit is not being characterized as being part of a new round of layoffs.
An ESPN spokesperson declined to comment.
ESPN had other shakeups in its editorial ranks last year when several editors left amid an investigation into HR complaints. The specific nature of the complaints was unclear. Former executive editor Cristina Daglas is currently working in the front office for the Wizards and Mystics. Elizabeth Baugh was sidelined amid the investigation and reportedly seen as a loyalist to Daglas. She left before the resolution, going to Ring magazine. Former NFL editor Heather Burns also departed the company and ultimately landed at USA Today.
After spending a long time at USA Today and a brief stint at The Athletic, Scott was hired into her job by former ESPN EVP Dave Roberts. Roberts retired earlier this year and Mike Foss was promoted into the role of EVP, executive editor, sports news and entertainment.
