Three MLB Teams Move Games to Avoid Cold Weather

The Yankees and Mets, playing home games in the same city, made different decisions.

Three MLB teams have moved home games this week to get slightly warmer weather.

First were the Cleveland Guardians, which moved a previously-scheduled Tuesday contest from 5:10 p.m. to 1:10 p.m. ET. Then the Chicago White Sox changed their Tuesday start time from 6:40 p.m. to 2:10 p.m. CT, before the New York Mets bumped their Tuesday and Wednesday games from 7:10 p.m. to 4:10 p.m. ET due to “cold weather and windy conditions.”

Temperatures in all three cities are expected to drop into the 30s Tuesday night.

Though all three teams made similar schedule changes, they’ve responded to it in different ways.

The Mets gave ticket-holders for Tuesday and Wednesday’s previously scheduled games vouchers that could be used for future games, as long as they are “comparable in price and location” to the initial games. They also offered a limited amount of free tickets to both games, which they announced were sold out just over two hours after the initial announcement.

Meanwhile, the Guardians are allowing Tuesday’s ticket-holders to exchange their evening ticket for any one of 50 of the team’s 77 remaining home games, including the rescheduled afternoon contest. The White Sox are making Tuesday evening tickets valid for the afternoon game, with “no exchanges necessary.”

While the White Sox do not have an option for future ticket exchanges, they invited all Chicago Public School students, parents of students, and employees with free tickets to Tuesday’s game to apply for ones for future home games on April 14 and 26.

Other teams, like the New York Yankees, are choosing not to respond to the weather at all.

According to the New York Daily News, the Mets’ crosstown rival discussed possibly rescheduling their home games during a club meeting this week, but ultimately decided against it. The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders and Somerset Patriots, the Yankees’ triple and double-A affiliates, respectively, postponed their Tuesday contests.
