John Karayan built it, and now they come.
Karayan started The Throwdown cornhole tournament in 2011, when the casual sport had little presence on the West Coast. Now the tournament draws talent and fans from around the country and is televised on ESPN.
Cornhole is about as simple as a sport can get, and that simplicity helps bring people together. The only prerequisite is that its participants be able to toss a bean bag 27 feet toward a hole. It’s often played in backyards or on beaches with a beverage in the non-throwing hand. And yet, for some, it’s a highly competitive sport.
John Karayan has managed to bring the casual and the competitive together in The Throwdown, which takes place from August 25-27.
Listen to how he created the tournament out of his taco stand and how it grew into the festival it is today at the links above.
