As was the case a year ago, North Carolina began its 2026 season by scoring first against TCU. But this time, that wasn’t the only highlight for the Tar Heels in their season opener.
UNC opened Year 2 of the Bill Belichick era in Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday, picking up an upset 15–10 victory over the Horned Frogs in the Aer Lingus College Football Classic. The Tar Heels’ victory stood in stark contrast to a year ago, when TCU beat UNC 48–14 in Belichick’s highly anticipated Chapel Hill debut.
Starting the season 1-0 is no small feat for the Tar Heels, who entered the 2026 campaign with less buzz and more baggage than a year ago. Most notably, the program placed general manager Michael Lombardi on paid administrative leave in late July as the university investigated a personnel complaint against the longtime Belichick associate. Meanwhile, UNC defensive coordinator Steve Belichick—Bill’s son—has been out on medical leave since Aug. 6 and didn’t coach against TCU on Saturday. In his place, Bill Belichick himself took over defensive play-calling duties, the first time he’s called plays full-time since his final season with the Patriots in 2019.
Yet despite the preseason distractions, the Tar Heels looked much improved from the UNC team that amassed a disappointing 4–8 record (2–6 in the ACC) during Belichick’s debut season in 2025. That’s not to say the Tar Heels are now a College Football Playoff—or even ACC—contender, or that the program’s unique NFL-centric approach has been validated. Still, the six-time Super Bowl champion head coach now has his first signature win at the college level.
Among the encouraging signs for the Tar Heels on Saturday was the play of quarterback Billy Edwards Jr. under new UNC offensive coordinator Bobby Petrino. The Wisconsin transfer, who carries a nearly $1.3 million NIL valuation according to The NIL Standard database, threw for 232 yards against the Horned Frogs, more than any Tar Heels quarterback amassed in a single game last season.
The UNC defense also looked vastly improved after ranking 66th nationally in points allowed per game in 2025. While some of the Horned Frogs’ struggles on Saturday were self-inflicted, the Tar Heels took advantage of their opportunities, limiting TCU to 281 total yards and 1-for-5 on fourth-down conversion attempts.
But regardless of how they got there, it’s already easy to sense a newfound optimism surrounding the UNC program—especially considering that the win came in the national spotlight of the first FBS game of the 2026 season. The Tar Heels entered Saturday’s contest as a 9.5-point underdog at some sportsbooks, a point spread indicative of the public’s expectations (or lack thereof) for the 74-year-old Belichick’s second UNC season.
Of course, it’s just one game and plenty can still change for a Tar Heels program that the ACC media voted to finish 15th out of 17 teams in its preseason poll. It’s also worth noting that the Lombardi situation remains unresolved and it remains to be seen when Steve Belichick will return as the team’s defensive coordinator. In other words, it’s far too early to point to Saturday’s win as evidence that UNC is now the NFL’s “33rd team,” as Lombardi once dubbed it in an effort to distinguish the Tar Heels as a pro-level program.
But should Saturday’s victory be a sign of things to come for UNC, the Tar Heels’ success would undoubtedly become one of the biggest storylines of the college football season. That would, in turn, have significant implications for the ACC’s primary media rights holder, ESPN, as well as the program’s own NIL efforts.
With a game against East Tennessee State on Sept. 12 to follow UNC’s upcoming bye week, a 2–0 start to the 2026 season appears to be all but a foregone conclusion in Chapel Hill. That could also set up a high-profile matchup against ACC rival Clemson on Sept. 19, as Belichick tries to make good on the buzz that accompanied his move to the college level a year ago.
