The City of Anaheim might slap the Los Angeles Angels with a bill almost as large as Mike Trout’s $426.5 million contract.
The team could be on the hook for more than $300 million in repairs to Angel Stadium.
- The Anaheim city council will consider approving a study expected to show that the venue needs hundreds of millions in repairs.
- While the city owns the stadium, the team is responsible for repairs outside of regular fixed payments.
- A 2013 report estimated that the stadium needed $130 million to $150 million in repairs, but a city spokesperson said in August it’s “easily double” now.
The city will consider commissioning a study in “anticipation of potential litigation.” The team’s lease requires that it “be maintained at a level at least equal to first-class professional baseball stadiums.”
Team for Sale
The potential repair bill comes as team owner Arte Moreno is seeking buyers for a sale that could reach $2.5 billion.
Moreno decided to sell after the city voted to kill a $320 million deal that would have sold him the stadium and surrounding land. Investigations revealed improper contacts between the team and Anaheim mayor Harry Sidhu, who has since resigned.
Los Angeles Times owner Dr. Patrick Soon-Shiong is reportedly considering a bid.
