ESPN Replaces Lead ‘College GameDay’ Producer in Shakeup

On the eve of the new college football season, ESPN is shaking up production leadership on College GameDay, Front Office Sports has confirmed.

Producer Jim Gaiero is being transferred into a broader role across ESPN’s live events portfolio, sources say. Matthew Garrett is taking over as executive producer for the venerable college football pregame show. As vice president of production, Garrett has overseen and worked on the show since 2023. His previous roles include serving as coordinating producer of Sunday NFL Countdown and Monday Night Countdown.

Awful Announcing broke the news of GameDay’s producer change.

Gaiero led GameDay for the past 10 years—a period of major cast changes that included the addition of Pat McAfee and Nick Saban, the departure of David Pollack, and the retirement of Lee Corso.

With the sports media giant going all-out for its first-ever Super Bowl telecast, Gaiero, a 31-year ESPN veteran, is expected to produce pregame and related programming around ESPN/ABC’s simulcast of Super Bowl LXI on Feb. 14, 2027. Gaiero will also continue to produce college football games.

Mike McQuade, ESPN’s executive vice president of sports production, is also expected to employ Gaiero on Masters and PGA Championship golf coverage, with an eye toward him assuming full production responsibilities in 2028.

It’s the second time in three years that ESPN has shaken up production leadership around the 40-year-old GameDay. In August 2023, ESPN parted ways with star producer Lee Fitting, who now serves as head of media and production for WWE.

As for Garrett, the 21-year ESPN veteran has been a vocal supporter of McAfee’s in recent years. In a 2024 interview with Sports Business Journal, Garrett referred to the West Virginia product as “a unique talent,” while praising his “incredible ability for engaging the on-site crowd.”

“If you ask me, it’s unmatched by anybody else on television,” he said of McAfee.

The surprise GameDay leadership switch will inevitably lead to soap opera-like speculation about what role McAfee played, if any, behind the scenes.

There’s no question that the addition of McAfee in 2022 and Saban in 2024 has revitalized the iconic show. GameDay is coming off its most-watched season ever, averaging 2.7 million viewers in 2025, a 22% increase. Led by Corso’s Week 1 farewell, the show posted its nine most-watched regular-season episodes ever last season.

But the mercurial, 39-year-old McAfee has also butted heads with GameDay colleagues and ESPN executives, mocking them as “old white people.” Last year, FOS reported that some co-workers were fed up with McAfee’s “diva-like” behavior. McAfee previously lashed out at powerful former ESPN executive Norby Williamson as a “rat” trying to sabotage his show.

Meanwhile, McAfee’s ESPN portfolio continues to grow, including joining the cast of the Monday Night Countdown NFL pregame show this season and likely hosting his own “Field Pass” of Super Bowl LXI. The former NFL punter has the support of ESPN’s most powerful executives. They include: chairman Jimmy Pitaro; president of content Burke Magnus; and Mike Foss, the increasingly influential executive vice president, executive editor of sports news and entertainment, who serves as McAfee’s liaison.

Even McAfee GameDay castmates would admit he’s now the show’s biggest star. His weekly field goal contest, in which he’s generously given away $6 million of his own money, has become must-see TV. When ESPN issued its press release touting GameDay’s upcoming season, McAfee was conspicuously pictured front and center alongside Herbstreit, Saban, and Davis.

In July, FOS first reported that McAfee had begun early talks on a long-term contract extension, worth an estimated $60 million a year. While McAfee licenses his eponymous weekday show to ESPN, he has a separate deal for GameDay. His current ESPN deals are set to expire in 2028.

Meanwhile, ESPN’s top execs are said to be thrilled at GameDay’s newfound ability to reach both younger (under 25) and female viewers. Audiences in those two key advertising-desired demos grew 35% and 34% last season, respectively. GameDay’s ratings grew 23% last year and would have still increased by 12% without the bump it received from Nielsen’s Big Data measurement system.

This season’s nine-person GameDay cast of McAfee, Saban, Herbstreit, Davis, Desmond Howard, “Stanford Steve” Coughlin, Jen Lada, Jess Sims, and Pete Thamel is poised to kick off the new season with a trip to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, in Week 1. The telecast will mark GameDay’s 500th road show. This will be Herbstreit’s 30th season on the show. In May, the GameDay team won its third consecutive Sports Emmy for outstanding weekly sports studio program.
