  • Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium tops the list.

Communities all over Texas care deeply about their high school football teams, and towns of all sizes flock to high school games every Friday night. With many of the largest crowds in high school football, high school football stadiums have become supersized in Texas — and almost all of the most expensive and high school stadiums are in Texas.

It’s almost hard to believe a proposed $94 million high school football stadium in the Lone Star State would not be the most expensive ever built at the high school level.

That crowd belongs to Ohio, as the most expensive high school football stadium in the U.S. is Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium, which cost a total of $175.8 million in inflation adjusted dollars.

This stadium is unique amongst the others in this list, in that it hosts the annual Pro Football Hall of Fame game in August.

Five local Canton high schools have used the fields for their games, however, and the stadium has hosted the 2017 and 2018 Ohio Football State Championships. But McKinley Senior High School uses it as its home field for football games throughout the season.

Cy-Fair FCU Stadium in Cypress, TX is second on the list, costing $124.8 million in inflation adjusted dollars. It is the most expensive stadium dedicated exclusively to high school sports.

Located in a northwest suburb of Houston, it’s the home field for 12 high schools in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District.

It features up to 11,000 seating capacity, a 15,333 square foot conference center for staff development, and a catering facility to accommodate food preparation for special events.

Also located on the outskirts of Houston is Katy Stadium, which is third in construction costs at $89.8 million, adjusted for inflation. It was completed in 2017, and funded by a $748 million bond approved by local voters in 2014.

Eagle Stadium, home of Allen High School in Allen, TX, is the only stadium on the list that serves just one high school. Adjusted for inflation, it cost a total of $82.2 million to build back in 2012.

Now that high school athletes are getting NIL deals, it wouldn’t be a surprise to hear about a high school football stadium crossing the $200 million mark at some point in the future.
