This week is poised to provide a critical look at NBC Sports’s present and future strategy.
Over the span of a few days, the network will air some of its highest-profile programming outside of the Olympics and the Super Bowl. They come at a crucial time, with parent company Comcast releasing a particularly anticipated corporate earnings report on Thursday. Among the upcoming events this week for NBC Sports:
- Ongoing coverage of the WNBA Finals, split between the NBC broadcast network, the Peacock streaming service, and USA Sports (which is controlled by Comcast spinoff entity Versant). Game 2 between the Dream and Valkyries is set for Monday night in San Francisco, and the series marks NBC Sports’s first WNBA Finals since 2002.
- A tripleheader on Tuesday to open the 2026–27 NBA season, with all three games shown on NBC and Peacock in a network first. The showcase game in that set is the primetime matchup between the defending-champion Knicks, who will raise their 2025–26 title banner, and the new-look 76ers, led in part by veteran star LeBron James.
- A blockbuster Sunday Night Football matchup on Oct. 25 between the undefeated, resurgent Chiefs, led by newly recovered star quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and the defending Super Bowl champion Seahawks. The football broadcast won’t have any competition for viewers from postseason baseball, as this Sunday will be a travel day between Games 2 and 3 of the World Series.
This year, NBC Sports has already registered a series of sizable viewership gains from a sports programming strategy built around major events, including coverage of the NFL, MLB, NBA, and WNBA.
“We love being back in the WNBA business. It was launched on NBC, and it was great in those early years, but it’s at a whole different level now,” NBC Sports executive producer Sam Flood said last week. “This is big time. The ratings are through the roof. They were really big back in our early days, but this current iteration of the league is so much fun to watch. These buildings are packed. The crowds are crazy engaged at every second of every game.”
Wall Street Worries
With the release of Comcast’s third-quarter earnings on Thursday morning, the company is expected to provide additional details surrounding its planned corporate split, with the connectivity and cable businesses staying with Comcast and the NBCUniversal entity that includes NBC Sports becoming a separate, publicly traded corporation, likely in mid-2027.
During Comcast’s second-quarter earnings, the company revealed a first-ever profit for Peacock. The third-quarter report will also include results from the end of a successful return season to MLB broadcasting.
Comcast stock, however, has remained sluggish, helping inform the forthcoming corporate split. So far in 2026, Comcast shares are down nearly 6% despite broader gains across the stock market, with several other parts of the company’s operations showing signs of weakness.
“In short, we think every key metric is likely worse than expected,” KeyBanc Capital Markets wrote in a recent downgrade of Comcast shares to an “underweight” ranking.
