The WNBA season — which culminated with Becky Hammon’s Las Vegas Aces taking home the franchise’s first title — was a big hit on Twitter.

Per data provided to Front Office Sports from the social media company, conversation volume about the WNBA during the season was up 72.8% in the United States compared to the 2021 campaign.

It’s not just the usual suspects tweeting about the W either: The number of unique authors of the tweets rose 92.1% in 2022 compared to 2021.

The WNBA did very well on Twitter outside the U.S. as well.

  • With more than three months remaining in the year, global conversation is already up 34.6%, and use of the hashtag #WNBATwitter is already up 13.7% globally.
  • 18.3% of all this season’s WNBA conversation came from a non-American audience.

The retiring Sue Bird, WNBA MVP A’ja Wilson, and Brittney Griner were the top three most mentioned handles among the league’s players.

Tweets acknowledging the Aces’ championship win did very well, with the team’s account, the WNBA, and FOS claiming the three most-retweeted tweets.
