When handling Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, the U.S. Open has chosen a different path than Wimbledon.
It will allow Russian and Belarusian players to play under neutral flags. But it will also host an exhibition match aimed at raising money for Ukrainian war relief, according to The New York Times. The event seeks to raise at least $2 million.
The USTA, which governs the U.S. Open, reportedly hopes that Russian and Belarusian players will participate.
Belarusian star Victoria Azarenka said she wanted to play, though the article could not confirm her participation — or that of other players.
Over the past several months, global sporting events have grappled with Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in different ways.
Wimbledon, the most recent major, banned Russian and Belarusian players from participating. The French Open allowed them to play, but refused to let them represent their native countries. The Australian Open allowed players without restrictions.
