James Dolan just got $10 million richer thanks to his work in separating the Knicks and Rangers into separate publicly traded companies.

Dolan, executive chairman and CEO of both MSG Knickerbockers Corp. and MSG Rangers Corp., received a “one-time cash award” of $10 million “in recognition of his significant efforts and leadership” tied to the spin-off, according to a Tuesday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

The award, approved by a three-person compensation committee that features no Dolan family members, was paid Monday (there are five Dolan family members who serve as non-employee directors for MSG Knickerbockers). The committee is “wholly independent” and is supported by an “independent compensation consultant and independent legal counsel,” the filing says. It does not include details on how the $10 million figure was determined or what specific work Dolan did to earn it.

It’s not uncommon for executives to receive special awards tied to spin-offs, according to a report released Monday by consulting firm Compensation Advisory Partners. The firm identified some form of special award in 24 of 29 spin-off transactions it studied, or 83%. Among those, the median size of the special award provided to CEOs was around $3 million, according to the report (the deals studied all took place between 2018 and 2026).

“The $10 million definitely stands out,” an executive compensation expert tells Front Office Sports. “It’s a healthy award.”

The expert, who asked not to be identified due to the nature of their work, says the disclosure around Dolan’s special award was “lighter” on details than many other public companies, which could be because he and members of his family retain majority voting control of the business.

“If another public company did this, they’d likely have a page or two of disclosure around how they came to that figure,” the expert says.

In Dolan’s case, there were two sentences. A representative for MSG declined to comment beyond what was included in the filing.

The spin-off was completed Monday, a little more than eight months after MSG Sports Corp.—which previously held both the Knicks and Rangers—first said it was exploring such a deal. Anyone can now buy stock in either team individually; they both trade on the New York Stock Exchange. For fiscal 2026, the Rangers recorded an operating loss of about $30.5 million. MSG Sports recorded full-year operating income of $28.9 million. Financial income details for the Knicks alone were not disclosed.

As of Tuesday afternoon, MSG Knickerbockers (MSGK) was trading about 4% higher, at $302 a share, and MSG Rangers (MSGR) gained under 1% at about $190 a share.

The filing also revealed other details about Dolan’s compensation. For his leadership role related to MSG Sports, which is now MSG Knickerbockers, Dolan received total compensation of about $13.05 million for the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2026, according to the SEC filing. That includes a $1.6 million base salary, a $1.38 million bonus, $7.7 million in stock awards, $1.82 million from an incentive compensation plan, $13,583 in deferred compensation earnings, and $542,000 in “other compensation.”

That $13.05 million total was slightly less than the prior year, when Dolan earned about $13.15 million through MSG Sports, including $1.6 million in base salary. In 2024, Dolan earned $10.15 million through MSG Sports, the filing says.

Dolan is also executive chairman and CEO of MSG Entertainment Corp., which owns Madison Square Garden, and Sphere Entertainment Co., which owns and operates the Sphere venue in Las Vegas.

In fiscal 2026, he received total compensation of about $14.79 million for leading MSG Entertainment. In addition to a $1.5 million base salary, Dolan received $8.9 million in stock awards, among other compensation. For his Sphere work, Dolan received almost $14.3 million in total compensation, including a base salary of $230,000 and “option awards” of more than $13 million.

Together, Dolan’s overall compensation in fiscal 2026 for his work with MSG Sports, MSG Entertainment, and Sphere totaled about $42.1 million.

Dolan, who inherited the Knicks and Rangers from his father, Cablevision founder Charles Dolan, is widely regarded as a billionaire, although he isn’t on the Forbes billionaires list. The Dolan family’s net worth is as much as $7 billion, Forbes reported in June.

Dolan Under Fire

The completed spin-off comes as the Knicks have sputtered out of the gate, sitting at 0–3 heading into Tuesday night’s game against the Pistons. Despite his team breaking a 53-year championship drought last season, Dolan has found himself at the center of multiple controversies in just the last month.

In September, individual Knicks tickets for the season opener against the 76ers originally went on sale for an average of $2,500. By the following day, ticket sales had been paused, with MSG Sports issuing a statement saying there was a “mistake in our pricing.”

A few weeks later, leading up to the spin-off, it was announced that controversial former Knicks coach and president Isiah Thomas would be joining the MSG Knickerbockers board of directors.

Most recently, the Knicks drew backlash after The Athletic reported assistant coaches didn’t receive championship rings on opening night, and that the company used the allure of choosing championship rings as bait for an email phishing test for MSG employees. Following publication of that story, the Knicks issued a statement saying it was an “unfortunate mistake” that rings had been used as the lure for the phishing test, and that the plan was always to give rings to players, coaches, employees, and “other members of the Knicks family.”

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
