After an up-and-down beginning to the NFL’s 2026 season, ESPN closed out Week 1 in emphatic fashion.
The Disney-owned network said late Wednesday that it averaged 23.2 million viewers for its Monday Night Football season debut, which featured a decisive Chiefs victory over the Broncos at Arrowhead Stadium. The figure is up 5% from a comparable Vikings-Bears game to start the 2025 season and represents the most-watched Week 1 MNF game in ESPN’s 20-year history with the program.
Among all 362 broadcasts in the ESPN MNF era, it’s also the third-most-watched game.
The game marked the successful return of Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who tore two ligaments in his left knee late last year.
ESPN’s audience total also represented one of the simplest comparisons last year among any of the NFL’s rights holders with Week 1 games. NBC Sports saw viewership decrease for the league’s kickoff game, and Netflix’s international game was flat, but both games aired on different nights of the week than Week 1 last year as the league’s scheduling norms have changed.
CBS and Fox also saw different patterns to start the season amid a rare Week 1 “double-doubleheader” in which the two networks aired games in both Sunday afternoon windows. That contrasted with CBS having the late-afternoon national slot to itself for Week 1 last year.
The other straightforward viewership comparison for the NFL’s opening week involved NBC Sports’ Sunday Night Football, which saw a 4% viewership lift this year for the primetime coverage of a Cowboys-Giants game that marked John Harbaugh’s debut as New York coach.

Attention around NFL viewership now shifts to Week 2, which has another set of big games. Amazon will begin its Thursday Night Football schedule with a Lions-Bills game that marks the opening of the new Highmark Stadium.
Mahomes and the Chiefs, meanwhile, will have another primetime showcase, staying at home for a SNF game against the Colts. ESPN also has another high-profile matchup for MNF, with the Giants heading to Los Angeles for a clash with the Super Bowl LXI favorite Rams, who are looking to rebound after a lackluster performance in Australia against the 49ers and an injury to star defensive end Myles Garrett.
