Baseball’s richest team is getting even richer in a move likely to escalate existing concerns about MLB’s competitive balance.
The two-time defending World Series champion Dodgers acquired Tigers ace Tarik Skubal, winner of the last two American League Cy Young Awards, late Saturday for three prospects in a blockbuster trade. Skubal had been the top name discussed as the Aug. 3 trade deadline approached, and the Dodgers beat out a set out of other suitors for the left-hander.
Skubal previously had signaled he did not want to leave Detroit. An underperforming Tigers team standing at five games under .500, however, exacerbated the pressure on the franchise to get something back for Skubal while it still could. Skubal will be a free agent after the season, is expected to at least challenge the $325 million record for a free-agent pitcher contract, and the status of any sort of draft-pick compensation in MLB is unknown amid ongoing labor negotiations with the MLB Players Association.
“I’m excited to be a Dodger,” Skubal said late Saturday after the Tigers beat the A’s in Sacramento. “I’m excited to get down there and meet all those guys and chase three championships in a row. It’s hard to do, so I’m excited to be a part of that.”
The Tigers will be receiving outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-handed pitchers River Ryan and Brady Smith in return for Skubal. Hope is seen as the best of the group and is currently ranked at No. 25 among the top 100 MLB prospects.
For the Dodgers, there are two primary benefits to landing Skubal—essentially as a short-term rental—beyond the pursuit of a third consecutive World Series title. The acquisition keeps Skubal from landing on an opposing team that Los Angeles will face in the postseason, and he also acts as something of an insurance policy for superstar Shohei Ohtani.
The two-way phenom hasn’t pitched in nearly a month due to knee pain that occurs when he’s on the mound. Dodgers executives intend for Ohtani to be available to pitch in October, but that remains uncertain.
The Dodgers, holding a 10-game lead in the National League West division, will see their league-leading luxury-tax payroll swell further to $430.3 million. The team will be responsible for paying about $9.5 million remaining on his 2026 salary, set after Skubal won a historic arbitration decision in early February.
Labor Implications
The Skubal trade, meanwhile, could further inflame talk about competitive balance that is a central feature of ongoing labor talks between MLB and the MLB Players Association.
While not scapegoating the Dodgers, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred has repeatedly pointed to fan input about the perceived lack of competitive balance around that sport. That input, in turn, has fueled management’s push for a hard salary cap that is being resisted by the players.
“What fans in a number of our markets are telling us, better than half of them, is that there’s a lack of competitive balance in the game,” Manfred said at the All-Star break. “Everything we’ve proposed is focused on addressing that fan concern.”
The Dodgers are a virtual lock to reach the postseason once again, but they’ll likely be joined by a series of low-spending upstarts that are challenging that management talking point. Bottom-tier spenders such as the Rays, White Sox, Guardians, and Twins remain firmly in playoff contention.
