As valuations of NFL teams skyrocket to new heights, so do the costs of building NFL stadiums.

Any proposed new NFL stadium will almost certainly cost more than a billion dollars to construct. The most expensive new stadium projects in the league are being proposed with price tags in the billions, with a mixture of public and private funding.

To gain access to public funding, proponents of new stadiums make lofty promises of higher property values in the surrounding areas and additional jobs.

SoFi Stadium cost $6.75 billion to build in inflation adjusted dollars, making it the most expensive NFL stadium in history.

Located in Inglewood, CA, and hosting the Rams and Chargers, it’s the most expensive sports stadium ever built. It’s also one of three NFL stadiums built without public funding, with billionaire Stanley Kroenke privately funding the project.

Despite including dazzling amenities such as an 80-million-pixel Samsung Infinity Screen, the stadium’s architects chose to omit certain features that leave some scratching their heads.

Most of the facility lacks AC, even though temperatures have reached the 90s before a game.

And when it rains, the open sides of the stadium bring nature’s elements to the fans. This carries a safety hazard, posing a risk of injury due to wet floors.

It appears neither factor will prevent it from hosting more big events. SoFi stadium is lined up to host Super Bowl LXI and swimming events for the 2028 Summer Olympics.

In second is Allegiant Stadium, home of the Raiders, which cost $2.33 billion to build, adjusted for inflation.

The stadium seats 65,000 and sits on 62 acres of land. Taxpayers chipped in $750 million in bonds underwritten by Clark County, NV.

Led by the same firms that built SoFi Stadium, the NFL’s latest venue broke ground in Nashville this past spring. The new Nissan Stadium is estimated to cost $2.1 billion, but that total could creep higher ahead of its scheduled completion before the 2027 season.
