Serena Collectibles Spike on eBay After Retirement Announcement

  • Sales of Williams collectibles surged 968% on its platforms on August 9.
  • Searches of “Serena Williams” surged 771% on the website.

Serena Williams’ retirement announcement sparked a frenzy in the market for her collectibles.

E-commerce giant eBay reported to Front Office Sports that sales of Williams collectibles surged 968% on its platforms on August 9 — the day the all-time tennis great announced her retirement from the sport.

Specifically, Williams trading cards saw a 713% increase in sales. Searches of “Serena Williams” surged 771% on the website.

A search on the site currently yields some lucrative results: The single highest-priced card on the site is being offered at $125,000.

That may be a bit ambitious given the going rate for some of Williams’ memorabilia.

In Jan. 2022, a 2003 NetPro Serena Williams Rookie Auto card sold for close to $40,000, while a 2003 NetPro Glossy Elite Serena Williams Rookie PSA 10 sold for $27,500 in Sept. 2021.

However, given this week’s massive news, the price to own a piece of tennis history could only be on the rise.
