The NHL plans to continue its outdoor Stadium Series with two 2024 regular season games played at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, home to the NFL’s New York Giants and Jets.
MetLife Stadium will host one NHL game between the New York Rangers and New York Islanders and another between the New Jersey Devils and Philadelphia Flyers, according to Sportsnet. The game will reportedly be played one day apart at MetLife, which opened in 2010 and can seat up to 82,500 fans.
The NHL Stadium Series has been held every year since 2014 except for 2021, with games typically played in late January or February in football or baseball stadiums. This year’s Stadium Series game between the Washington Capitals and Carolina Hurricanes was played on February 18 at NC State University’s Carter-Finley Stadium in Raleigh.
The NHL held its first outdoor regular season game in 2003 and has played at least one outdoor game per year since 2008. Other outdoor series from the NHL include its Heritage Classic, the Winter Classic, and NHL Outdoors at Lake Tahoe, held once in 2021.
This year’s Heritage Classic between the Calgary Flames and Edmonton Oilers will be played on October 29 at the CFL’s Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. The next Winter Classic will be held on Jan. 1, 2024, at MLB’s Seattle Mariners’ T-Mobile Park between the Vegas Golden Knights and Seattle Kraken.
