LIV Delays Michigan Announcement Amid Investor Talks

Currently, LIV Golf Michigan remains scheduled for Aug. 27–30 in suburban Detroit at The Cardinal at Saint John’s Resort.

LIV Golf will not make any official announcement this week about the status of next month’s team championship despite increasing uncertainty around the $40 million season finale, sources familiar with the league’s thinking told Front Office Sports.

Currently, LIV Golf Michigan remains scheduled for Aug. 27–30 in suburban Detroit at The Cardinal at Saint John’s Resort. But sources have told FOS and multiple other outlets that the event will be canceled. There has been no tournament infrastructure or fan hospitality built out yet at The Cardinal, which also hosted last year’s LIV team championship.

LIV has been searching for new investors since the Saudi PIF announced in April that it would pull its funding following the 2026 season. Amid the transition, LIV is considering all options that best position the business for what officials are calling “LIV 2.0,” which could mean taking a “disciplined approach to support the league’s long-term sustainability and maintain operations,” according to the sources.

As for the team championship,  it’s unclear whether LIV has the funds to back the event and is considering saving some or all of that money for 2027, or if the tour simply doesn’t have the funding to host its season finale.

While LIV Michigan is unlikely to proceed, LIV New York at Trump Bedminster (Aug. 6-9) and LIV Indianapolis (Aug. 20-23) are expected to still be played. It’s also possible the league could incorporate elements of the team championship at the Indianapolis tournament.

Positive Momentum For LIV?

LIV has been hoping to secure new funding by the end of this season, with a working deadline believed to be Sept. 1.

The league has reportedly received “multiple written commitments from blue-chip investment firms that would serve as anchor investors to support the league,” going forward, sources told the New York Post. Those prospective “anchor” investors “have submitted qualified term sheets” that would “support the formation of a financing syndicate with sufficient backing to capitalize” what LIV Golf is calling “LIV 2.0.” The sources said the expectation is that a deal will be finalized “sometime in September.’’

Last week, LIV’s U.K. event—its first after a 47-day break—drew 50,000 fans at JCB Golf & Country Club across the four competition days, up from 43,000 fans at last year’s three-day event, according to the league. The third round of LIV U.K. hit capacity and marked the highest-attended single day in the event’s five-year history, in addition to setting a new single-day merchandise sales record for LIV events in the U.K. Private hospitality also sold out for all four days at JCB.

LIV Golf declined to comment for this story. Spokespeople for Saint John’s Resort and the PIF have not responded to requests for comment from FOS.
