The jubilation from the Knicks’ championship resulted in dozens of arrests and multiple damaged vehicles in New York City.
The New York Police Department announced Sunday morning that 63 people were arrested around Madison Square Garden after the Knicks won their first championship since 1973. The police also said that 10 officers were injured during the celebration, which officials described as including tens of thousands of people.
Other details the police announced included:
- 10 injured NYPD officers
- 4 slashing/stabbings
- 5 school buses set on fire
- 5 damaged police cars
The police also said that a 17-year-old boy was shot in the foot while in a crowd a few blocks north of the arena. He was transported to a nearby hospital using a police vehicle because the crowds made it difficult for ambulances to reach the scene, and is in stable condition.
Officials said the five school buses that were set on fire were used to transport fans to the World Cup match between Brazil and Morocco at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
The Knicks did not play at MSG for the series-clinching Game 5, instead winning at the Frost Bank Center in San Antonio.
Watch parties by the arena were a point of contention between the city and the NYPD throughout the series. There were no watch parties around MSG for Games 3 and 4, which were both played in New York. Both MSG and the office of NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani issued dueling statements Tuesday ahead of Game 4.
But there was a watch party outside MSG for Game 5 that included a maximum of 3,000 ticketed fans.
There were also several watch parties throughout the city across the different boroughs, which were constantly shown during the ABC broadcast.
Mamdani tweeted at around 2 a.m. ET Sunday that the Knicks’ championship parade will take place in Manhattan on Thursday.
