DHS Is Arguing With an NBA Fan Account on Twitter

Hoodgenius vs. DHS took over NBA Twitter ahead of Tuesday night’s opener.

The official account for the Department of Homeland Security is arguing on social media with an NBA account known as Hoodgenius.

The account has interacted twice with the fan account known for posting about the Milwaukee Bucks and Green Bay Packers, setting off a social media frenzy in the lead up to Tuesday night’s tip-off to the 2025–26 NBA season.

The interaction began over the weekend. On Friday, the DHS account shared a TikTok video that seemed to threaten ICE agents. “FAFO,” the government account posted along with the video, short for “Fuck around and find out.” “If you threaten or lay hands on our law enforcement officers we will hunt you down and you will find out, really quick. We’ll see you cowards soon.”

The main subject of the video has said they did not post the video because their account was hacked, and the original video was made months ago about Iran, not ICE, as a joke as part of a trend. (Immigration and Customs Enforcement is an agency under the Department of Homeland Security.)

On Saturday, Hoodgenius broke away from their usual sports fodder to respond to DHS. “Spreading misinformation especially as ‘the department of homeland security’ should cause for the abolishment of that said department,” the still-anonymous user wrote.

DHS responded to Hoodgenius on Sunday, writing “We have the receipts, and the internet is forever.” “The willful ignorance and intentional blindness by leading Democrats to the massive increase in violent rhetoric against our agents due to their actions is both disgusting and disappointing,” the account posted.

The interaction took off on X. Hoodgenius continued posting and sharing jokes about the situation as they rapidly gained new followers, adding “‘Leading Democrat’ – DHS (2025)” to their bio on X. People posted about the “Hoodgenius subplot” to the NBA season and the DHS account at it with a sports fan account during the government shutdown. Some users even resurfaced a 2021 post from Hoodgenius that read “Never Being friends wit a n***a named Homeland Security,” along with a laughing emoji.

So many NBA fans began posting about the exchange that platform made it a trending news highlight, incorrectly saying DHS accused Hoodgenius of threatening ICE. (X did not immediately respond to questions about the error.)

The madness only intensified Tuesday morning, when Hoodgenius posted about being “officially the face” of the Milwaukee Bucks community on X. DHS responded within 20 minutes: “We hear you know ball.”

About an hour later, Hoodgenius “ratioed” the DHS account, meaning his reshare received more likes than their original one. The DHS post featured a popular meme describing “How it feels to be a criminal illegal alien,” to which Hoodgenius responded “This not banging lil bro.” Hoodgenius’s post garnered 6.7 million views on X.

Hoodgenius posted celebrating reaching 20,000 followers on Monday morning. The numbers kept growing to more than 100,000 followers on Tuesday afternoon, more than 125,000 on Tuesday night, and 150,000 on Wednesday afternoon.

Neither Hoodgenius nor DHS responded to Front Office Sports inquiries.

“I did not expect the federal government to reply to my tweet,” the user behind the account said in an interview with Playback. “I am not a Democrat, I am not a Republican, I am not liberal, I am not conservative. I’m Hoodgenius.”
