A’s Name Jenny Cavnar First Female MLB Play-By-Play Announcer

  • Cavnar, a former Rockies reporter and backup announcer, now heads to NBC Sports California.
  • The move comes in a month of turmoil for the A’s, whose future move to Las Vegas has hogged headlines.

Sure, the future of the Athletics hangs in the air, but the team made some history Tuesday as it sorts out its possible move to Las Vegas.

NBC Sports California, the team’s regional sports network, has named Jenny Cavnar as the primary play-by-play announcer for A’s games, making her the first female primary play-by-play voice in the history of Major League Baseball. Cavnar spent the past 12 years as a backup play-by-play announcer, and reporter, as well as a pre- and post-game host for Rockies games.

“Jenny is a very talented announcer with significant experience covering baseball,” said Matt Murphy, the president and general manager of NBC Sports California and NBC Sports Bay Area. “She’s been a groundbreaking professional who’s earned the admiration of fans and her peers throughout her career. We’re very excited for her to join our excellent team and lead our A’s coverage starting this season.”

The announcement comes during a tough offseason stretch for the organization, and just as spring training gets underway. Ahead of the Super Bowl, Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman told Front Office Sports that the A’s, who had announced a move to Vegas for the 2028 season, “don’t make sense” for the Nevada city and that they should remain in Oakland. (In the aftermath, she walked back her words a bit.) Should the A’s move, the team doesn’t have a temporary plan for where to play in ’25 or beyond. MLB commissioner Rob Manfred, meanwhile, recently said he wanted to see that plan in the coming months.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
