After signing the richest contract in sports history, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is now a part-owner of the Kansas City Royals.

The 24-year-old Super Bowl MVP grew up in MLB clubhouses, as his father Pat pitched for 11 seasons in the majors for six different clubs – none of them the Royals.

“I love this city and the people of this great town,” Mahomes said. “This opportunity allows me to deepen my roots in this community, which is something I’m excited to do.”

In early July, the Chiefs signed Mahomes to an extension worth up to $503 million that will keep him in town through 2031.

LeBron James and Venus and Serena Williams are among the other active athletes who own stakes in professional teams. James invested in Fenway Sports Group in 2011 to become a partial owner of Liverpool FC, while the Williams sisters became minority stakeholders in the Miami Dolphins in 2009.

While Mahomes is now the youngest legal owner in sports history, Serena Williams’ 2-year-old daughter Olympia was announced as a part-owner of the Los Angeles NWSL expansion team last week.

“Along with the rest of Kansas City, I have watched Patrick compete and become an extraordinary leader, both on and off the football field,” Royals chairman, CEO and principal owner John Sherman said. “He loves football, but he also grew up loving the game of baseball. We look forward to many years of a winning partnership.”

Sherman himself is new to the Royals: the businessman bought the team from David Glass for $1 billion last August and was previously a minority owner of the Cleveland Indians.
