NBA Coin strikes again.
The league’s official Instagram account briefly displayed a post urging people to buy cryptocurrency.
The post read: “Where basketball passion meets blockchain innovation. Join the community and explore $NBA today. BUY NOW!” It included a contract address for a memecoin created on Pump.fun, a platform where people can create and launch their own tokens.
The NBA didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment about the apparent hack, but the post didn’t stay up for long, and it didn’t reach that many willing buyers. The token, created on Wednesday, had a market cap of about $3,500 as of Wednesday evening.
The league’s social media accounts have been hacked before to launch a crypto coin, also called $NBA Coin.
In March of last year, the league confirmed hackers were behind an Twitter post that read: “The NBA is taking the game to the next level. Introducing $NBA Coin—our official digital asset on Solana, designed to enhance fan engagement and the future of sports transactions.” The post ended with a different token contracts address and was deleted roughly five minutes later. Official NBA accounts from Spain, the UK, and elsewhere also tweeted out the announcement.
During the March 2025 incident, NASCAR’s official X account was also hacked.
