Andy Reid Gets His $100 Million

  • The Kansas City coach previously made $12.5 million per season.
  • Chiefs’ ownership has been labeled cheap in recent months by the NFLPA report card.

The Chiefs’ dynasty is finally paying off for Andy Reid.

Monday, the Chiefs extended Reid in a deal that was merely reported as making him the highest-paid coach in the NFL. But NFL coaching salaries are murky, with some teams using the lack of transparency to lowball assistants and others using the lack of a salary cap to break the bank for brand-name hires.

Tuesday, the value of the deal was reported by Sportico: $100 million over five years. The contract makes him the highest-paid coach in U.S. sports and expires after the 2029 Super Bowl, when Reid would be a month from turning 71. Reid previously made $12 million a year in his last contract.

Additionally, Kansas City extended the contracts of general manager Brett Veach and president Mark Donovan.

“Mark, Brett and Andy have achieved historic success together, and we are thrilled that they will continue in their roles for many years to come,” team owner Clark Hunt said in a statement. “Individually, Mark, Brett and Andy each represent the best in the National Football League at their respective positions, and together, they make up one of the finest leadership teams in all of professional sports.”

The move represents a public relations win for a team that hasn’t seen many since winning its second consecutive Super Bowl in February. Hunt’s family was voted among the league’s worst ownership groups in the NFLPA’s annual report card, in which Reid was also voted one of the NFL’s best coaches. The Chiefs also saw a controversial sales tax that would help fund proposed renovations to Arrowhead Stadium fail to pass in a public vote by locals, which Donovan said could lead the team to look elsewhere if it did. Wide receiver Rashee Rice is likely facing a multigame suspension due to his role in a multivehicle Dallas car wreck, which sent two people to the hospital, and Rice reportedly fled.

Reid, who is 66, never publicly said he considered retiring, but NBC Sports reported the Chiefs were prepared for the possibility, which is perhaps why he got a contract that only rivals Bill Belichick’s most recent one with the Patriots, which reportedly paid $25 million a year

Hunt also opened his checkbook for defensive end Chris Jones this offseason. Jones signed a five-year deal worth more than $158 million, which is the second-highest contract signed by a defensive player.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
