Russell Wilson Will Earn Nearly $300M with Record Extension

  • The five-year, $245M extension is the largest in Broncos franchise history.
  • Wilson is now the second-highest-paid player in the NFL by AAV ($49M).
Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

When the Seahawks sent Russell Wilson to Denver, it was called “one of the biggest trades in NFL history.”

Now, the Broncos have ensured that Wilson will be their quarterback of the future, locking him in with a five-year, $245 million extension, with $165 million guaranteed, according to multiple reports.

The new deal will keep Wilson in Denver through the 2028 season and will allow him to make $296 million in total when combined with his current contract.

The pact sets several milestones for the veteran QB and the franchise.

  • Wilson is now the highest-paid player in Broncos history.
  • The contract’s $49M AAV is second in the NFL to only Aaron Rodgers’ $50.3M.
  • The 33-year-old now ranks third in the NFL in guaranteed money, trailing only Deshaun Watson ($230M) and Kyler Murray ($189.5M).

Wilson earned the deal through his elite play at football’s most important position, as he leads all NFL quarterbacks in number of games (45) with a 100+ QB rating over the last five seasons.

It’s the latest twist in an exploding quarterback market: All of the aforementioned deals went down during this offseason.

The final domino to fall could be Lamar Jackson. The Ravens QB is entering the final season of his rookie contract, is self-representing himself, and is reportedly seeking a fully guaranteed deal — much like Watson got a few months ago.
