An iconic athlete has provided aid to families going through unimaginable tragedy.

Days after the Uvalde school massacre in May, two-sport icon Bo Jackson flew to Texas and delivered a $170,000 check to Gov. Greg Abbott to cover funeral costs for the 19 students and two teachers killed, Jackson recently told the Associated Press.

The 1985 Heisman Trophy winner turned MLB and NFL superstar did not want the affected families to have to carry a financial burden in addition to the emotional one.

“I know every family there probably works their butts off just to do what they do,” said Jackson. “The last thing they needed was to shell out thousands of dollars for something that never should have happened.

“It’s just not right for parents to bury their kids. It’s just not right.”

The 59-year-old has become deeply involved in charitable work since retiring from baseball and football: His Give Me a Chance Foundation provides opportunities in sports for underserved youth athletes, while Bo Bikes Bama is an annual bike ride he leads that raises funds for the Alabama Governor’s Emergency Relief Fund.
