As the White Sox mount an improbable playoff run, the future of their announce booth is up in the air, Front Office Sports has learned.
MLB.com previously reported that play-by-play announcer John Schriffen’s deal is up at the end of this season. There have been no recent renewal talks, one source said. According to another source, CHSN president and CEO Mike McCarthy has “put out feelers” about potential replacements. McCarthy could not be reached for comment and Schriffen declined to comment.
Asked for comment about the premise that Schriffen is not expected to return, a White Sox spokesperson told FOS, “We understand that it’s the time of year when these questions come up, but we are focused solely on the postseason.”
Schriffen joined the White Sox announce booth alongside Steve Stone in 2024, replacing Jason Benetti, who left to become the voice of the Tigers. During his first season, he had a back-and-forth tiff with local Chicago sports talk radio station 670 the Score.
In addition to the White Sox, Schriffen calls a number of sports for ESPN—including college football, college basketball, the UFL, and NBA G League and Summer League—as well as UFC events on Paramount+.
In Schriffen’s first season with the White Sox, the team set a modern-era record for losses, going 41-121. Last year, the team was 60-102.
This season has seen a surprising major upswing, as the Southsiders went 84-78, earning a Wild Card berth. They swept the Astros in the best-of-three playoff series and travel to Cleveland to play the Guardians in Game 1 of the ALDS on Saturday.
