At the Final Four on Thursday, NCAA president Mark Emmert urged the association to work with Congress to create a standard NIL model across the country for purposes of regulation.

College athletes have been able to benefit from their name, image, and likeness since July 1, but each state has carried different policies, which has created more than 30 different NIL laws.

Emmert said the NCAA has “had a variety of legal actions in the courts” because of the different laws.

“We’re at a place of huge disjuncture around college sports,” he said. He believes there’s a “short window of time during which the schools … need to decide what they want the relationship [with] student-athletes and their schools to be.”

Emmert also spoke about the transfer portal and the NCAA v. Alston case, which revealed the association was in violation of antitrust law due to limits placed on education-related benefits for student-athletes.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
