Welcome to the FOS Trending 20, presented by Conviva Social Insights

PLEASE NOTE: THIS IS AN ARCHIVED VERSION OF TRENDING 20 FROM OCTOBER 2020. SEE THIS WEEK’S EDITION.

This new collaboration between Front Office Sports and Conviva ranks the pro teams and leagues/events which are driving the deepest cross-platform engagement across social platforms (Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, Facebook).

Published every Tuesday morning, this leaderboard draws data from the prior Monday through Sunday.

This page — updated weekly — contains two leaderboards; first, the Top 20 professional teams, ranked by cross-platform engagement rate, and then below it, the Top 20 leagues/events/properties, also ranked by cross-platform engagement rate.

For more on the methodology and criteria on Trending 20, please visit our explainer section below the two leaderboards.

All data is sourced using Conviva Social Insights, a social analytics platform for brands, media, entertainment and sports organizations worldwide.

For additional context and information on this week’s leaderboard, please see the “Notes” sections below each leaderboard.

[/vc_column_text][vc_column_text]Each week, we’ll try to add some context below the Trending 20 leaderboards, touching on why certain accounts are topping this week’s leaderboards, along with tracking streaks and milestones, and highlighting the teams and leagues which consistently find themselves on the Trending 20 leaderboard…

Brand Release & Banner Week

While it had been long reported that the NWSL’s expansion franchise in Los Angeles would be known as Angel City FC, the official brand launch and name confirmation came last week with substantial fanfare; Angel City led the way for the ascendant NWSL this week on social, as six of the league’s 11 teams cracked this week’s leaderboard. The league’s other expansion team — Racing Louisville FC — would have cracked the Trending 20, but did not meet the minimum post criteria.

Sharing The Love
While the Top 10 of this week’s Trending 20 is dominated by NWSL and MLB franchises, there are actually eight different professional leagues represented in the leaderboard. Last week saw seven different leagues represented. In our first two weeks, we still have not seen any Trending 20 appearances from MLS teams or from clubs in Ligue 1, or Liga MX.

The Regulars
From last week’s Trending 20, we saw half the teams maintain a spot on the leaderboard this week. Among them, five teams took home a Top 10 spot for the second week in a row: Atlanta Braves, Los Angeles Dodgers, Tampa Bay Rays, Houston Dash, and Las Vegas Aces.

Six teams saw their total cross-platform audience grow 1-percent or more in the past week…
Angel City FC, Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers, Wolverhampton, Nashville SC, West Ham

*The minimum for Trending 20 consideration is 20 posts in the prior week. This week, 15 of 274 tracked pro teams were ineligible for Trending 20 due to a lack of posts.

Super Netball again holds the top spot in the Trending 20, with a notable gap between the Australia-based netball league and the rest of the most-engaged leagues and properties. Similar to most sports brands, Super Netball draws the bulk of its engagements from Instagram. However, Super Netball — with its 75k Instagram followers — has drawn well over 600k engagements on the platform in the past 30 days, which nets out to a remarkable 8.2 engagements per follower for the month.

A B1G Return To Football
With the return of Big Ten football on Saturday, the conference enters the Trending 20 based on a big Friday (October 23rd), buoyed by relatively simple utility-based content. As teams returned to the field, the conference designed graphics with simple game start times and schedules which — paired with fans’ excitement around the return — drove significant engagement over the weekend.

Fight Night Day
The high-profile UFC 254 card began on Saturday afternoon for American viewers (2pm ET start time), as it was scheduled primarily for viewers in Europe and the Middle East. That early time slot seemed to pay dividends on social, as the UFC’s flagship brand and the UFC Europe account both planted themselves in this week’s Trending 20. While engagement rate can sometimes be deflated for major properties with massive audiences such as UFC, this weekend’s action showed that the MMA giant continues to capture attention in the U.S. and abroad around tentpole events.

High-Growth Properties

A handful of this week’s Trending 20 properties also doubled as the fastest-growing audience in sports over the past week.  AFL led all properties with a notable 5.8% audience growth rate over the past week, while Copa Sudamericana, UFC (and UFC Europe), Super Netball and the Indian Premier League all slotted in as the fastest-growing accounts in our dataset.

*The minimum for Trending 20 consideration is 20 posts in the prior week. This week, 21 of 99 tracked leagues/events were ineligible for Trending 20 due to a lack of posts.

[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][vc_column][vc_text_separator title=”FAQ: METHODOLOGY & ELIGIBILITY”][vc_column_text]Q: How do we determine and rank the Trending 20 accounts?

A: Trending 20 accounts are ranked based on cross-platform engagement rate, and all data is sourced from the Conviva Social Insights leaderboard platform.

Q: What platforms are included in the “cross-platform” engagement rate?

A: The four platforms included are Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Twitter.

Q: What is “engagement rate” anyway? How is it calculated?

A: The engagement rate shown is the average engagement rate for all posts during the set period. Engagement rate per post is calculated by the total number of engagements divided by audience, expressed as a percentage.

Q: My team/brand account had a higher engagement rate than others on this list, but we’re not included. What gives?

A: Sorry about that! In this case, your account either did not meet the minimum 20-post threshold for eligibility, or the account is not included in our current list of eligible teams/properties.

Q: Will more teams/leagues be added to the list of eligible accounts? How can I request to have my team or league added?

A: Yes, we will continue to add teams from more professional leagues, as well as potentially adding additional or emergent leagues or event properties. Please request an addition by emailing Edgar Walker (edgar@frontofficesports.com) or tweeting our FOS Insights department @FOSInsights.

Q: Will you be ranking collegiate programs, as well?

A: This one is a bit tricky — some athletic programs house all their posts from one central account while others have dedicated team accounts — but we are actively seeking out the best course of action to rank collegiate programs by the same methodology as professional teams.

Q: How can I see more similar data and go deeper than the Trending 20?

A: Conviva has an extensive, curated database of sports teams, athletes, leagues, and brands. As you’ve registered for access for the Trending 20, Conviva may reach out with information on their product. For more detailed leaderboard listings or to request a free trial, visit the Conviva website.

If you have any additional questions about the methodology or data utilized for the Trending 20, please contact info@frontofficesports.com or tweet our FOS Insights department @FOSInsights.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row disable_element=”yes”][vc_column][vc_basic_grid post_type=”post” max_items=”18″ style=”lazy” items_per_page=”1″ item=”mediaGrid_SlideOutCaption” grid_id=”vc_gid:1603810473002-1f0ba890-b67b-4″ taxonomies=”1258, 2233, 6521, 6516, 1177, 2085, 72″ exclude=”43506, 42832″][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column][/vc_column][/vc_row]
