Rays Clinch Pennant, Head to Small-Market World Series

MLB’s big spenders have all been eliminated from the playoffs, and the 2026 World Series features two teams from the other end of the economic scale.

The low-budget World Series is formally set.

The Rays, operating with MLB’s fourth-smallest luxury tax payroll at $113.2 million, clinched their first American League pennant since 2020, completing a six-game AL Championship Series win over the Guardians on Monday at a raucous Tropicana Field.

In the World Series, the Rays will face the Brewers, who swept the big-budget, two-time defending champion Dodgers in the National League Championship Series and enter the Fall Classic with a $154.7 million payroll that ranks 19th in the league. Game 1 is scheduled for Friday at American Family Field in Milwaukee, where ticket resale demand is reaching historic levels.

Neither the Rays nor the Brewers have won a World Series. Tampa Bay had two prior World Series appearances, falling to the Dodgers in 2020 and the Phillies in 2008. Milwaukee’s lone prior appearance in 1982 while playing as an American League team ended in a seven-game loss to the Cardinals.

Broader Issues

The Rays-Brewers matchup means that MLB will have its first small-market World Series winner since the 2015 Royals. It also counters, at least to some degree, the league’s narrative in ongoing labor negotiations with the MLB Players Association that low-revenue teams cannot consistently compete in the sport’s current economic framework.

In line with that thinking, MLB team owners have proposed dramatic changes, including a hard salary cap, significant restrictions to free agency, and an overhaul of the MLB draft. The union vehemently opposes those offers, particularly the salary cap, and is looking to retain the core of the sport’s market-based economic system.

Amid that divide, owners are expected to lock out the players in December when the current collective bargaining agreement expires.

In the meantime, the Rays’ pennant extends a banner 2026 for the club under the first full season of the new Patrick Zalupski-led ownership group, which included a landmark deal with the City of Tampa and Hillsborough County, Florida, officials for a new $2.36 billion ballpark. That forthcoming domed stadium, to be located on the Dale Mabry Campus of Hillsborough College, will anchor a larger mixed-use development.

Groundbreaking will happen over the next several months, ahead of a planned stadium opening in 2029.

Viewership Test

Generating widespread viewership for the 2026 World Series, meanwhile, could be tougher for Fox Sports, which will show the event in the U.S. It enjoyed historic viewership in both 2024 and 2025 with the Dodgers playing.

While the latest World Series matchup will feature emerging stars such as Brewers pitcher Jacob Misiorowski and Rays third baseman Junior Caminero, those players do not carry the stature of the Dodgers’ Shohei Ohtani or Yankees’ Aaron Judge.

A potential proxy for what might be coming is the 2023 World Series between the Diamondbacks and Rangers, which also featured a pair of unexpected upstarts. That five-game series, won by Texas, averaged 9.1 million viewers and remains the least-watched World Series on record.

Fox Sports, however, also arrives at the World Series with some momentum. Despite the NLCS sweep, that round of the postseason averaged 7.53 million viewers, representing the best LCS audience on any network since 2015.
