Keelon Russell Carries a Growing NIL Brand and Alabama’s Playoff Hopes

Keelon Russell is one of college football’s brightest young stars, with an endorsement portfolio to match. Now it’s up to the Alabama quarterback to keep his team’s playoff hopes on track.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Keelon Russell stood at midfield, patiently waiting with his helmet in hand for his turn.

The cameras weren’t on him, but rather Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton, who had just led the Bulldogs to a 20–17 win over Russell’s Alabama. Stockton finished his interviews and Russell embraced him, congratulating the senior quarterback on the win. Russell, a sophomore and first-year starter, more than proved he belonged in the biggest game of his young career and sixth career start overall, but fell just short in one of the most contested games of the 2026 season.

“It’s a learning moment,” Russell said postgame. “We’re gonna get better. This is a good team that we lost to. Everybody hates to lose, but it’s a learning moment. We get to look back at the film, understand what we got to critique, and get back out there and just go 1–0 next week. So we’re gonna be better. We’re gonna be good.”

Alabama, 5–1 overall and No. 6 in the AP Top 25, is still in postseason contention, but what happens next is just as consequential as the top-ranked matchup it just played. Its next opponent is significant: a road game against rival and No. 14 Tennessee on Saturday. It’s an inflection point at the midway mark of the season—both for Alabama and for Russell.

Nearly two months into the 2026 season, the Duncanville, Texas, native is one of the fastest-rising stars in the sport. On the field, he leads the SEC in passing yards (1,599) and is third in total touchdowns (16). NFL Draft pundit Todd McShay has already suggested that Russell—who is not draft-eligible until after the 2027 season—could receive a 99 grade, which he’s only given to one other player: 2012 No. 1 overall pick Andrew Luck.

Off the field, Russell carries a $2 million NIL (name, image, and likeness) valuation according to On3, the highest on Alabama’s team. His portfolio includes merchandise collaborations with JNJ apparel, exclusive content through Alabama’s third-party NIL content arm Yea Alabama, and more. His most notable endorsement is Nike, which signed Russell through its Blue Ribbon Elite NIL roster last month.

His emergence has been Alabama’s lead storyline this season, and all eyes will be on Russell again this Saturday in another high-profile spot. There’s confidence that he will take the lessons from last week’s game and lead Alabama to a bounceback win in Knoxville, Tennessee—a place Alabama hasn’t won since 2020.

“There’s the area of like, ‘Hey, I can do this,’” Crimson Tide coach Kalen DeBoer said of Russell’s play against Georgia. “And a confidence piece whether it’s figuring out ways to move football down the field … I like the direction he continues to go. These experiences just continue to add up and stack on themselves in a positive way.”

The Rise of Russell

Russell was a known commodity in Texas at a young age, but it took a little longer for national acclaim. He took over Duncanville High’s program as a sophomore, leading the team to back-to-back Class 6A titles. Those teams featured several current prominent college football players, including Texas defensive end Collin Simmons and Oregon wide receiver Dakorien Moore.

Russell committed to local SMU midway through his junior year in 2023. At the time, he was only a three-star recruit, but his profile would quickly take off in a matter of months.

That same year, DeBoer was leading Washington to an undefeated regular season en route to a national championship game appearance. His quarterback was Michael Penix Jr., a future Heisman Trophy finalist and top-10 NFL Draft pick.

DeBoer left Washington for Alabama in January 2024 following Nick Saban’s retirement. DeBoer brought a quarterback with him from Seattle, Austin Mack, but re-establishing a future recruiting board was one of the priorities on the transition to-do list. When his staff finally had a chance to scout Russell in the spring of 2024, it knew it had found a hidden gem.

“With our staff coming in January, still some moving parts we’re putting together in February, we really didn‘t get a chance to get to him and see him in the spring,” DeBoer answered in response to a question from Front Office Sports on the SEC coaches teleconference call. “When we did, [then co-offensive coordinators Nick Sheridan and JaMarcus Shephard] said, ‘this guy‘s the real deal.’”

Sheridan, now the offensive coordinator at Michigan State, also identified Penix in the recruiting process while on staff at Tennessee in 2016. Penix eventually committed to Tennessee in 2017, but a coaching change left him without a scholarship. He reunited with Sheridan, who became the quarterbacks coach at Indiana, and was later joined by DeBoer, the Hoosiers’ offensive coordinator in 2019. As the trio developed together, and results showed, the impact wasn’t lost on Russell.

“Believing in our system, believing that we can develop them,” DeBoer said. “I think Michael’s growth and what he accomplished helps. It helps a parent, helps a player that comes in our program where you feel like this is the place they need to be.”

Russell and Alabama’s relationship quickly developed. He received an offer in April, took an official visit in late May, and committed less than a week later. Simultaneously, he started to emerge on the national scene by attending camps and performing well. He was named Elite 11 camp MVP that summer, and carried that into a senior year, where he won Gatorade National Player of the Year, recording 58 touchdowns and leading Duncanville to a 13–1 record. In a year’s time, the former three-star prospect became the highest-rated player to sign with Alabama out of high school according to 247Sports with a final grade of 0.9997 out of 1.000.

“It just was a guy that had the it factor in our mind,” DeBoer said. “It happened fast but when you see it, you know. The film popped off when you turned it on, and then it was just a matter of seeing him in person and getting to know him and our opportunity to have him here on official visit was exactly that.”

Becoming the Face of Alabama Football

Russell arrived at Alabama in 2025 with high expectations and a big brand. He signed an exclusive, multi-year trading card deal with Panini America shortly after enrolling. On the field, he sat behind first-round pick Ty Simpson for all of last season. A highly anticipated quarterback battle ensued between Russell and the veteran Mack this past offseason, carrying from spring until late August. Eventually, Russell won the starting job and hasn’t looked back.

His play on the field has been matched by a rising profile off the field. In addition to the aforementioned deals with Nike and Panini, Russell has a deal with Reign Total Body Fuel and has collaborated with Mercedes-Benz.

On the field, Russell continues an impressive quarterback lineage under DeBoer. Each of his last four quarterbacks—Simpson (Rams), Jalen Milroe (Seahawks), Penix (Falcons), and Jake Haener (Giants)—has been drafted and is currently on an NFL roster. There’s a chance that Russell could become the best of them as a college prospect.

The next challenge is leading Alabama over Tennessee, and doing so without star wide receiver Ryan Coleman-Williams, Alabama’s second-highest-paid player, who will miss some time to injury. Still, there’s a trust that exists between DeBoer and Russell that’s uncommon for a young, first-year starter. But to this point, it’s been rewarded.

“[His skillset] just opens up more and more of the playbook,” DeBoer said. “You trust him in the moments that maybe sometimes people don’t with younger quarterbacks, and it’s just been a process and growth.

“He keeps the chains moving and putting points on the board, so he’s done a nice job. I think the guys around him have done a really nice job too doing their job and early on taking some of that pressure off of him. Everyone’s gaining momentum along with him.”
