NFL Color Rush: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

I say keep. In my opinion the color rush uniforms are brilliant on Nike’s part. This is similar to an alternate uniform, but every team has it. Not only does it allow for a whole new swatch of merchandise to be sold, it also becomes a trend that people are talking about. To touch on the new swatch of merchandise sales, Nike has created a Color Rush apparel edition on their website. They are able to sell hoodies, t-shirts, jerseys, shoes, hates, etc. in the Color Rush color swatches. The best part of it all is the gear is LIMITED EDITION. People know they can only buy the gear for a limited amount of time, so on top of buying their normal year-to-year team gear; they are now purchasing Color Rush gear on top of it-genius!

People certainly enjoy being unique, especially sports fans. The Color Rush Colors allow Nike to accent colors that are not typically prominent in a team’s gear. The Color Rush jerseys are also usually brighter colors than the typical team colors. For example, the New York Jets’ original green jersey compared to their Color Rush green jersey. You can certainly see the difference in color.

Now I cannot speak for everyone, but personally, I enjoy the brighter colors. The lime green of Seattle or the Carolina blue of the Panthers has always intrigued me. I think this allows each team to add that twist onto their uniforms. People have mixed opinions on the Color Rush collection, especially after last year’s color blindness fiasco. This became an apparent issue during last year’s Bills vs. Jets game when red-green color blindness made it difficult to watch two teams that were wearing those colors.

This year, the NFL and Nike put a little more thought into the colorblindness issues and the Color Rush schedule. Every team was designed a Color Rush uniform, however, not all teams will be wearing it this year. The Browns, the Jets, the Redskins, the Falcons, the Cardinals, the Lions, the Rams, the Colts, and the Texans will not wear their uniforms due to the issue. The Color Rush game is the Thursday night game of each week, with the exclusion of Thanksgiving and a special edition Christmas Day appearance. The decision was then made depending on who was playing and whether or not the colors would clash. If the colors do in fact clash, the home team will wear the color rush jersey and the away team will not. The away team will then be wearing a white jersey, unless the Color Rush jersey is white, then the team wil wear a different colored jersey.

The Color Rush uniforms not only create a slur of money from additional merchandise sales, but they also create a lot of pop culture and social media buzz. It is a change up from the original uniforms, and it definitely gives teams something to advertise and fans something to talk about. Whether the uniform is good or bad, it gets people talking. All that talking is marketing for Nike and the NFL.

I am loving all the funny memes we are getting out of the color rush uniforms. I am really excited to see the Smurf memes that come after the Titans wear their uniforms on October 27th.

I have put together a Color Rush schedule so you can tune in and create funny memes of your own; I know I will be. Teams wearing their Color Rush will be italicized.

· Week 6: Broncos vs. Chargers

· Week 7: Bears vs. Packers

· Week 8: Jaguars vs. Titans

· Week 9: Falcons vs. Buccaneers

· Week 10: Browns vs. Ravens

· Week 11: Saints vs. Panthers

· Week 12: Thanksgiving

· Week 13: Cowboys vs. Vikings

· Week 14: Raiders vs. Chiefs

· Week 15: Rams vs. Seahawks

· Week 16: Giants vs. Eagles

· Special Edition Christmas Day: Steelers vs. Ravens

Although the Color Rush unis can give us a good laugh or just really impress us with how sweet they look, they are for a good cause. The first $500,000 profit made from the initiative will be donated to flood victims in Baton Rouge, LA to replace any damaged football fields and equipment. To me, these uniforms are all around a great concept. What do you think? Take a look, and tell us your best and worst of the year!
