From a sports media standpoint, there may not have been a bigger winner at this year’s World Cup than Zlatan Ibrahimović.
Yet despite receiving plenty of praise for his work as an analyst, the former striker insists that his time in the Fox Sports studio will be one and done.
“I have been talking a lot the last one-and-a-half months, so these will be my last words,” Ibrahimović said before thanking his colleagues and Fox as the network’s postgame coverage of Spain’s victory over Argentina in the World Cup final came to a close on Sunday. “You made it easy for me. I hope, America, you enjoyed it as much as I did. And this is also my farewell to this studio. It was the first and last time for me. So, take care, everybody.”
In many ways, Ibrahimović’s abrupt announcement came as a surprise. While it initially took some time to jell, the Fox World Cup studio consisting of Rebecca Lowe, Alexi Lalas, Thierry Henry, and Ibrahimović ultimately received high marks throughout the tournament, with Ibrahimović, in particular, standing out in his debut gig as a TV pundit.
An accomplished striker whose playing career from 1999-2023 included stints at high profile clubs such as Inter Milan, Barcelona, AC Milan, Paris Saint-Germain, Manchester United, and the LA Galaxy, Ibrahimović’s on-field resume brought instant credibility to the Fox set. Despite not previously possessing traditional broadcasting experience, his status as one of the sport’s best soundbites as a player helped make for a seamless transition.
Between his ability to connect with the sport’s biggest stars, make bold proclamations, and play off the polarizing Lalas, it appeared that the Sweden native had just begun a promising broadcasting career. But while he seemed definitive in saying his time as an analyst had come to an end, he also wouldn’t be the first broadcaster to not follow through on such plans.
Dating back to 2012, Charles Barkley has made a habit of hinting at—if not outright announcing—his impending retirement from TNT Sports. In some instances, the Hall of Fame forward appeared to be creating leverage for a new contract. In others, he merely seemed frustrated by the uncertainty surrounding his employer.
Regardless of his motive, Barkley still remains a staple of Inside the NBA, which now airs on ESPN via a licensing agreement with TNT Sports. Could Ibrahimović be eyeing a similar strategy?
It would make sense, especially when considering it has yet to be determined which network (or streamer) will have the rights to the 2030 World Cup. With two years to go until Fox hosts the UEFA European Championship tournament in 2028, the network has plenty of time to sort out its coverage plans—including, perhaps, a new contract for Ibrahimović.
Whether it’s Fox or elsewhere, one would imagine that whoever lands the next World Cup will do its best to make Ibrahimović a part of its presentation. And with his sign-off on Sunday, the 44-year-old likely just drove up his asking price—intentionally, or not.
Fox Sports didn’t respond to a request for comment from Front Office Sports regarding Ibrahimović’s status moving forward.
