Scottie Scheffler’s 16-under at this weekend’s Tour Championship at the East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta earned him his third PGA Tour win this year. But the massive $10 million winner’s purse also catapulted him past Tiger Woods as the Tour’s all-time earnings leader.
To date, he has taken home $130,390,661 in PGA Tour career earnings.
Scheffler entered the weekend just $608,505 behind Woods on the career earnings list. He passed Rory McIlroy at No. 2 two weeks ago by winning the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis—the first of three playoff events that culminated with the Tour Championship this weekend. But the golfer was unable to overtake Woods on the money list at last week’s BMW Championship in St. Louis, where he shot 7-under and finished in a tie for 12th place.
The 30-year-old American finished the Tour Championship three strokes ahead of Norwegian Viktor Hovland, who earned $5 million for second place.
Hovland came into Sunday at 15-under with a one-shot lead over Ryan Gerard—with Scheffler lurking three strokes back along with Chris Gotterup. Then, while Hovland and Gerard struggled slightly, Scheffler got hot, hitting six birdies on the final day to surge into the lead.
It has been a strange year for Scheffler. Despite retaining his status as the world’s No. 1–ranked golfer, he went over half a year in between wins. After claiming The American Express trophy in January, he didn’t win another until the FedEx St. Jude Championship. Still, he’s finished in the top five 13 times and has won more than $30 million on the PGA Tour this year. He also earned $23 million in FedExCup bonus money for being in first place following last week’s BMW Championship; the PGA Tour does not count bonus money as career earnings.
Scheffler has now led the Tour in prize money for five consecutive seasons.
