Michael Jordan memorabilia is always bound to make an impact in the collectibles market — but its latest entry could set a record.
Jordan’s game-worn jersey from Game 1 of the 1998 NBA Finals — the climax of the famed “Last Dance” season — will be going up for auction online at Sotheby’s from Sept. 6-14.
Per the auction house, the jersey is expected to fetch a winning bid between $3 million and $5 million — the largest estimate ever for a piece of Jordan memorabilia.
Sotheby’s head of streetwear and modern collectibles Brahm Wachter told the New York Post that the record estimate is a result of the rarity and renown of this specific item.
“Red is really the color that people think about when they think about Michael Jordan, and this is the only red Finals jersey to ever appear at auction,” he said.
This auction is the first offering of Sotheby’s event entitled Invictus — a two-part series that will feature collectibles from some of sports’ most iconic athletes, including Roger Federer, Wayne Gretzky, and Muhammad Ali.
In May, Diego Maradona’s famous “Hand of God” jersey sold at the auction house for a record $9.3 million after receiving an estimate of $5 million to $7.5 million.
