Maradona’s ‘Hand of God’ Jersey Set For Record $6.32M Sale

Soccer icon Diego Maradona’s “Hand of God” jersey worn in the infamous 1986 World Cup quarter-final against England was put up for auction on Wednesday — and has reportedly received a record $6.32 million bid with buyer’s premium.

The Sotheby’s auction still has two weeks left, but that price would see Maradona beat out baseball great Babe Ruth, whose 1928-30 road jersey set the previous record for the highest-priced sale of a game-used jersey ($5.6M) in 2019.

The Argentina legend swapped shirts after the match with English midfielder Steve Hodge, who has been in possession of it for the last 35 years.

The jersey has been displayed in the National Football Museum for more than 20 years.

“Hand of God” refers to the infamous incident in which the 25-year-old Maradona deceived the referee by scoring a goal with his hand. His sensational goal-scoring run later in the same game was voted “Goal of the Century” in a FIFA poll.

The jersey is on display in Sotheby’s London showroom for the duration of the bidding period.
