Jim Furyk to Lead U.S. Ryder Cup Again After Tiger Woods Drops Out

Woods was considered the frontrunner to be named captain until he withdrew from consideration a DUI arrest in March.

The U.S. Ryder Cup team will have a familiar face at the helm.

The PGA of America is expected to select Jim Furyk to lead the 2027 U.S. Ryder Cup team in Ireland, nearly a decade after he was first captain, according to the Associated Press. He will be tasked to revitalize an American side that has won just two times since 2010.

Furyk’s selection comes after Tiger Woods withdrew from consideration for the role, according to the AP

Woods was considered a frontrunner for the capitancy, but announced late last month that he would be “stepping away for a period of time to seek treatment and focus on my health.” On March 27, Woods was arrested in South Florida for suspicion of driving while impaired

With its selection, the PGA of America is going with a known entity—though the U.S. hasn’t exactly been successful when veteran Furyk has participated.

Furyk was the 2018 U.S. Ryder Cup captain in France, when Europe routed the U.S., 17 ½–10 ½. He represented the U.S. as a player at the Ryder Cup nine times from 1997–2014, winning only twice. He was vice captain in 2016, 2021, 2023, and 2025, going 2–2 in those stints.

But he has seen other success, leading the U.S. team to a win at the 2024 President’s Cup.

The Ryder Cup will take place Sept 13–19 next year at Adare Manor in County Limerick.
