Just one year into his retirement, former Giants catcher Buster Posey has already made history.

Posey is the first former player to join the Giants’ ownership group, the team announced on Wednesday. He’s now the 31st principal partner of the team, and a member of the Board of Directors.

“Upon his retirement last year, Buster said that he would always stay involved with the organization,” Giants chairman Greg Johnson said in a statement. “It is rare for a former player to join his own team’s ownership with the desire to have an active role.”

Posey, who played for the Giants his entire 12-year career, led the team to three World Series championships, was a seven-time All-Star, and won the 2012 NL MVP. He’s now a Hall of Fame candidate.

“I feel deeply connected to the Giants and the San Francisco Bay Area and hope that my perspective as a former player will be beneficial in growing the game and assisting the organization to build the next championship team both on and off the field,” Posey said in a statement.

He joins other former players, like Hall of Famer Derek Jeter, in making a foray into team ownership after his playing career. Though he’s one of few who will work with a team for which he actually played.
