At the 2022 men’s FIFA World Cup, the Danish national team will wear jerseys protesting the multitude of human rights violations committed by the Qatari government.
World Cup kits include multiple jerseys that players wear throughout the tournament. All three will signify a protest — they’ll sport solid colors red, black, and white.
The symbols on the jerseys, including the Hummel logo and chevrons, will be monochrome so as not to draw attention to the brand.
“We don’t wish to be visible during a tournament that has cost thousands of people their lives,” Hummel wrote on Twitter.
The coloring choice is a workaround to display a protest on team kits, as FIFA rules do not allow any sort of visible language delineating a protest.
The nation has been heavily criticized by human rights groups for the mistreatment of workers, many of whom were put in dangerous conditions — and severely underpaid.
