EPL Clubs Spend Record $1.8B in Summer Transfer Window

  • The clubs have already spent more than they did all of last season.
  • The summer transfer window closes Sept. 1.

An extremely busy Premier League summer transfer window has now set a record with a week to spare.

According to professional services network Deloitte, clubs in the English top flight have spent around $1.8 billion since the window opened on June 10 — surpassing 2017 ($1.7B) as the most money spent in a summer transfer window.

The figure is also higher than Premier League clubs spent all of last season ($1.7B). The full-season spending record was set in 2017-18 with approximately $2.2 billion.

Thus far, the biggest move of the summer was made by Liverpool, who signed Darwin Nunez from Benfica for a fee that could top $100.6 million.

Manchester United’s acquisition of Casemiro from Real Madrid for $71 million (and up to $82.8M) is second, while the blockbuster $60.6 million transfer of Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund to Manchester City comes in at third.

Chelsea were one of the biggest spenders after their highly publicized change in ownership.

  • Marc Cucurella ($74.6M, Brighton)
  • Raheem Sterling ($59.2M, Manchester City)
  • Kalidou Koulibaly ($40.2M, Napoli)

First-place Arsenal do not appear on the top spenders list until the $53.2 million transfer of Gabriel Jesus from Man City.

Many of these clubs will be hoping their new prizes can help them in European competition.

On Thursday, Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, and Tottenham Hotspur learned who they will play in the UEFA Champions League group stage via the UCL draw.

The summer transfer window closes Sept. 1.
