Omar Khan Goes From Operations Intern to Steelers GM

When it came to hiring a new general manager, the Steelers stayed in-house.

Omar Khan, who started with the Saints as an operations intern, joined Pittsburgh as a football operations coordinator in 2001, and most recently served as VP of football and business administration, was officially named GM on Wednesday.

The 45-year-old inked a four-year deal to replace Kevin Colbert, who in January announced his retirement as the team’s GM and VP after 22 seasons. 

In his previous role, Khan was primarily in charge of managing the team’s salary cap. Having emerged from an original list of six candidates for the GM job, he’ll be formally introduced at a news conference Friday morning.

”I am ready for this challenge and grateful to continue the success we have had on the field during my first 21 years. I look forward to completing our football operations staff and working tirelessly to build another championship football team for Steelers Nation and our community,” Khan said in a statement. 

Meanwhile, the Steelers also hired Eagles VP of player personnel Andy Weidl as assistant GM, according to multiple reports.
