After canceling the Russian Grand Prix in February due to the country’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, Formula 1 has decided not to replace the event on the 2022 calendar, per Sky Sports.

Though there were multiple options to compensate for the Sept. 25 race’s absence, namely from Qatar and Turkey, F1 decided not to restore the 23-event schedule — which would’ve marked a record-length season.

There are no plans for the competition to return to Russia in the future, as F1 terminated its contract with the Russian GP’s promoter in March.

The reasons for maintaining the current 22-race plan included logistical issues for the European Union and the fact that a Qatar race would be staged in unbearable heat and only two months before the country hosts the FIFA World Cup.

Following a successful Miami Grand Prix, the season resumes in Spain on May 22.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc currently sits atop the driver standings.
