The Australian Grand Prix set a new attendance record at the circuit this past weekend with 419,114 spectators over a four-day period.
The impressive turnout surpassed the event’s previous record attendance of 401,000 set during its inaugural weekend in 1996.
The abundance of racing fans in Melbourne was attributed to a return of the event after cancellations in 2020 and 2021 and an influx of new Formula 1 fans thanks to the Netflix docuseries “Drive to Survive.”
This year’s edition, which was won by Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc, drew 128,294 people to watch Sunday’s race and 55,106 fans on Thursday — despite no cars taking the track.
The weekend at Albert Park Circuit also surpassed last year’s United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas, which hosted 400,000 spectators — F1’s highest attendance in 2021.
The Australian Grand Prix is no stranger to breaking records. The race holds F1’s all-time record for attendance at 520,000 in 1995, the last time it was held in Adelaide.
