Univision to Launch Global Streaming Service

Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports/Design: Alex Brooks

The largest offering of Spanish-language content is coming — and bringing live sports with it.

Just months after Univision announced plans to acquire Televisa at a value of $4.8 billion, the Spanish-language TV network unveiled the planned launch of a streaming service in 2022.

Adding to its 61 television stations and 58 radio stations in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, Univision will offer both ad-supported and premium subscription-based streaming options in the U.S. and Latin America.

Specific details surrounding the service will not be released until the Televisa merger is closed later this year. Televisa invested $1.2 billion in 2010 for a 5% stake in Univision, and after a string of investments, the company will see its stake grow from 36% to 45% in the new deal.

PrendeTV, Univision’s existing ad-supported streaming service, as well as its VIX and Univision NOW streaming services, will be housed within the new service and anchor the ad-supported tier.

Univision’s sports division merged with Televisa’s in 2019. The company voiced plans in Monday’s announcement to expand its sports offering from its existing deals.

  • Covers Copa America, the Mexican League, Copa MX, and Liga MX
  • Holds partnerships with NFL and MLB teams
  • Signed a five-year deal with Hispanic mixed martial arts franchise Combate Americas

In May, Univision reported a $66 million profit for Q1 2021, more than six times the amount reported the year prior. It attributed its 7% quarterly increase in revenue to growth in national advertising.
