Multi-Platform Talent Jason Concepcion Departing The Ringer

  • Concepcion hosted the wildly popular podcast “Binge Mode” and digital show “NBA Desktop.”
  • Desktop won the 2019 Sports Emmy for Outstanding Digital Innovation.
The Ringer

Jason Concepcion, a multi-platform talent at The Ringer known for his podcast appearances and digital NBA show “NBA Desktop,” is leaving the company, he announced.

Concepcion first joined one of Bill Simmons’ media companies as a staff writer at ESPN’s Grantland in 2013. After the outlet shuttered, he made the move to The Ringer, where he became senior creative. Concepcion has amassed nearly 240,000 followers on Twitter.

As host of “NBA Desktop” — a digital show about NBA Twitter — Concepcion was part of The Ringer’s team that won the 2019 Sports Emmy for Outstanding Digital Innovation. Prior to his departure announcement, earlier in October, the show said it was coming to an end after two seasons.

Desktop has spawned several viral segments, including the song “Halleluka” a parody of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah” about Dallas Mavericks star Luka Dončić.

Through he appeared on numerous shows, Conception’s main podcasting endeavour with the company was the wildly popular “Binge Mode” — which has taken deep dives into fantasy series including “Game of Thrones,” “Harry Potter,” “Star Wars,” and currently, the Marvel Cinematic Universe — co-hosted with Ringer editor-in-chief Mallory Rubin.

Concepcion said he will be finishing out the MCU season of Binge Mode, which was announced on Oct. 22 and is set to feature all 23 films, though his official last day with the company is Nov. 1.

It’s not clear at this time where Concepcion is heading next. But he’s previously tested the waters of working on the NBA league side: he co-wrote the script for the video game NBA 2K18, including all of LaVar Ball’s in-game social media posts and text messages.

Concepcion’s background, notably, is in music: he graduated from Berklee College of Music in 1997 and went on to perform as a guitarist and composer in his early career.
