“I like the spear,” owner Josh Harris said in London this weekend.

The Commanders are considering making their alternate logo featuring a spear and the letter “W” their primary team logo as soon as the 2027 NFL season, a source tells Front Office Sports.

The change is “under consideration” but is “not done yet,” the source cautioned to FOS, adding that fan response—including merchandise sales—to that logo “has been very positive.”

The team continues to “look at ways to bridge [the] past and present of [the] Commanders brand,” according to the source.

Commanders owner Josh Harris addressed the issue at a fan event Saturday in London, where the team played the Colts on Sunday at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, without providing specific plans.

“Obviously everyone is enjoying what we’re doing, which is embracing the past as much as we can in a respectful way,” Harris told reporters. “And we’re going to keep looking at how we keep doing that. … I like the spear. And obviously we had it on our helmet way back.”

The prospective change for 2027 was first reported on social media by reporter Zach Cohen.

The process for an NFL team to change a logo can be complicated and time-consuming. The Commanders’ current primary logo is a letter W. They will use the logo with a spear piercing the W on an alternate helmet later this season.

The Commanders have used the franchise’s former controversial team name and logo in association with the limited sale of merchandise featuring some prominent former players.

That logo features a Native American man in profile, with trailing feathers.

“When we recognize alumni through merchandise, our goal is to ensure those products authentically reflect the era they represent, and that is shown in the handful of items we are selling,” a Commanders spokesperson said in a statement to FOS for a story last month.

“It’s also important that we protect our trademarks. We are required to maintain the marks in commercial usage so that marks remain under franchise control. There are no changes to our previous position on the team name, and we’re excited to showcase the Commanders brand this season in ways that celebrate our past while looking toward the future.”

Harris has said the franchise intends to keep the Commanders name and does not plan to revert back to the old name.

Former owner Daniel Snyder had pledged that the team would never change its name. But under mounting pressure from sponsors, Snyder’s franchise dropped the name and logo in July 2020. The team unveiled the Commanders name in February 2022.

Harris’s group purchased the team from Snyder in 2023 for $6.05 billion.

This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.
