Cameron Brink did not mince words when asked about Enes Kanter Freedom.
The Los Angeles Sparks forward spoke to The Mirror US ahead of her team’s game Monday against the Atlanta Dream, and called the former NBA player a “stupid piece of shit” for his recent antics.
“I don’t even know what the fuck his name is—Enes Kanter—he’s a stupid piece of shit. And I think a lot of people think that and I think he’s just trying to stay relevant,” Brink said.
Over the last month, Freedom has claimed to identify as a woman while also declaring for the 2027 WNBA draft. The 34-year-old, who last played in the NBA in 2022, had used social media and conservative media outlets to express his WNBA aspirations. On Sunday he attended a WNBA game in Chicago between the Sky and Indiana Fever.
Freedom was removed from the game in the third quarter after a verbal altercation with Sky guard Natasha Cloud. The Sky have banned him indefinitely from attending home games, though a league source told Front Office Sports that Freedom will not be handed a league-wide ban from attending games as a fan.
Brink also defended the trans community Monday, calling the debate of trans women playing in women’s sports a “non-issue.”
“Taking something that’s just like a non-issue right now and just trying to use it for clickbait, for views, for likes, and then targeting a vulnerable community is just really low,” Brink added.
Freedom has challenged the WNBA’s eligibility rules, which are collectively bargained. The league’s latest collective bargaining agreement has one line on gender eligibility, which states “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.” It does not include any language around gender identity or gender assigned at birth.
On Monday, league sources told FOS that Kanter—and Royce White, another former NBA player claiming to identify as a woman to declare for the WNBA draft—are not eligible to play in the WNBA based on the league’s current eligibility rules.
The league sources also said the WNBA will continue to review its policy, but does not have any legitimate and immediate eligibility matters that require action.
