The Little League World Series hasn’t even started, but the road to Williamsport has already become unusually messy.
A player eligibility dispute involving Tulsa National Little League escalated from the baseball field to a Texas courtroom this week—including restraining orders and parental pleas—ultimately ending the team’s bid for the Little League World Series.
Here’s what happened:
Tulsa National’s team of 10- to 12-year-olds was disqualified from the Southwest Region Tournament on Monday after Little League International determined that a player who had competed for the team earlier in the tournament was ineligible. The player had appeared during the Oklahoma state tournament, but was removed from the roster before Tulsa competed in the regional tournament in Waco, Texas.
Due to the disqualification, Little League declared Tulsa’s previous regional game a forfeit, leaving Texas West’s Boerne and Louisiana’s Ascension Parish to play for the regional title. Boerne won 4–1 Monday afternoon and was initially crowned Southwest Region champion.
Later that evening, parents of Tulsa’s players sued Little League Baseball and secured a temporary restraining order that blocked the organization from enforcing the disqualification. Judge Ryan Luna ordered Tulsa and Boerne to play for the regional championship Tuesday night, with the winner slated to move on to Williamsport, Pennsylvania, where the Little League World Series is held later this month.
That game never took place.
Letter From Parents
Little League filed an emergency motion Tuesday asking Luna to dissolve the restraining order, arguing that Boerne players and families had already begun leaving Waco and that the organization couldn’t recreate a championship that had already been played. Luna sided with Little League later that afternoon, leaving Tulsa out and Boerne as the Southwest Region representative in Williamsport.
In response, parents of Tulsa’s 13 remaining players said on Tuesday that all of the players who competed in the regional tournament were eligible, given that the disputed player had already been removed from the roster.
“These children relied on adults to correctly interpret the rules, verify eligibility, communicate with families, and protect the integrity of their tournament experience,” the parents said in a statement.
The eligibility issue centered on a player who lived outside Tulsa National’s geographic boundaries. According to court documents filed by the parents obtained by ESPN, the player had previously been deemed eligible under an exception tied to his sibling’s participation in the Little League’s Challenger program, which serves players with intellectual and physical disabilities. But Little League said in its court filing that the sibling did not meet the requirements for the exception.
The controversy is not Tulsa National’s first eligibility issue of the summer.
Its softball team was disqualified from the Southwest Region Tournament in July after Little League said sufficient documentation could not be provided to establish the eligibility of all players.
Broader Backlash Against Tulsa
The two disqualifications have now prompted a broader backlash across Oklahoma Little League. On Thursday, two Oklahoma teams, with the backing of more than 300 coaches and parents called on Little League International to remove Oklahoma District Administrator Mindy Abbott and Southwest Region Director Blaine Whitmire.
Pottawatomie County Little League and Deer Creek Little League also called for Tulsa National’s charter to be revoked and for its 2025 and 2026 Oklahoma State and Southwest Region tournament titles to be vacated.
“We have lost all confidence in the administration entrusted to govern Little League in Oklahoma and the Southwest Region with integrity, impartiality, and fairness,” the letter read.
Neither Tulsa National nor Little League International responded to requests for comment from Front Office Sports.
The Little League World Series begins Aug. 19 in Williamsport, with some U.S. regional spots still to be decided Friday. Boerne has secured the Southwest Region spot, while Tulsa’s season is over.
