PGA Championship Increases Purse to Record $19 Million

The PGA Championship does not have the richest purse in golf, but the major has upped its prize money offerings in recent years.

The PGA Championship has increased its purse to a record $19 million, the PGA of America announced Saturday.

That’s up from the previous high of $18.5 million for last year’s tournament, which paid out $3.33 million to winner Xander Schauffele.

The winner this week at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte will take home $3.42 million, also a record for the tournament. The top three finishers will each take home more than $1 million.

Even with the record payout, the PGA Championship remains third out of the four major championships in total prize money offered.

Last year’s U.S. Open purse was $21.5 million, and the Open Championship (also known as the British Open) paid out $17 million. The Masters increased its purse to $21 million in April. The U.S. Open and Open Championship are expected to increase their purses in June and July, respectively.

Operated by the PGA of America, the PGA Championship’s new prize money allotment is still slightly behind the $20 million purses paid out at the PGA Tour’s eight signature events and the individual tournament purses at LIV Golf events.

The Players Championship remains the highest purse in professional golf at $25 million. Rory McIlroy earned $4.5 million for winning this year’s event, the same haul Scottie Scheffler took home in 2024.

Scheffler sits at the top the leaderboard heading into the final round of the PGA Championship, three strokes ahead of Sweden’s Alex Norén, with LIV golfers Jon Rahm and Bryson DeChambeau in the hunt in the top 10 as well.
